At the G7 Summit in France, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung made a direct appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to lead renewed efforts in engaging North Korea on its nuclear program. This request was highlighted during a brief interaction on the sidelines of the summit, where South Korea was present as a guest nation. Lee emphasized the importance of Trump’s diplomatic style, recalling previous negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a framework for potential progress.

The call for action comes amidst heightened scrutiny over North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile capabilities, developments that have coincided with a strengthening of ties between Pyongyang and Moscow. Despite past high-profile summit meetings between Trump and Kim, these diplomatic endeavors did not culminate in a conclusive agreement on denuclearization, leaving the issue unresolved.

Recent signals, such as Trump’s public mentions of his earlier meetings with Kim, have been interpreted by some officials in South Korea as a possible indication of Trump’s willingness to reengage. In response, Seoul has been actively advocating for renewed dialogue while simultaneously bolstering defense cooperation with its allies to address regional security challenges.

In addition to his interaction with Trump, President Lee also held discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. Their conversation focused on enhancing defense collaboration and broader security partnerships, reflecting South Korea’s strategic efforts to expand its diplomatic and security engagements with international partners during the summit.
