The promotions of 135 members of the US Air Force’s security forces have been revoked due to a scoring error in the evaluation of their specialty knowledge test. This mistake involved the use of an outdated scoring key for the Security Forces Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT), which inaccurately assessed the candidates’ performances. These individuals were initially informed that they had qualified for promotion to the rank of technical sergeant.

Upon identifying the error, the Air Force conducted a thorough review and rescored all 2,285 exam papers. This rescoring process enabled them to determine the correct list of candidates eligible for promotion. Consequently, the 135 promotions that were incorrectly awarded will be adjusted to reflect the rightful recipients. Despite these changes, the total number of promotions available remains fixed at 586.

Air Force leadership has characterized the incident as an isolated error stemming from human oversight, emphasizing that artificial intelligence tools did not play a role in the grading process. In response to the situation, they have implemented enhanced internal review procedures to mitigate the risk of similar errors occurring in future promotion assessments.

Personnel affected by this error have been informed about the changes to their promotion status and have been offered support to help them navigate the implications. The Air Force is taking steps to ensure the integrity of its promotion process and to reinforce confidence among its personnel.
