The United States Mint has commenced the production of a new commemorative $1 coin, which will feature President Donald Trump. This initiative is part of the celebrations planned for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The US Treasury Department confirmed that the coin is slated for release in the fall. Officials from the Treasury revealed that although the design was approved earlier this year, the version now being produced includes a few modifications from the original, notably a gold-colored finish instead of being made from solid gold.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed that the coin serves as an homage to America’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism. He emphasized that it reflects the nation’s core values and steadfast commitment to freedom. On one side of the coin, there is a portrait of Trump accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side showcases the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The unveiling of the coin has sparked some controversy due to a longstanding federal law that generally forbids the depiction of living presidents on United States currency. Despite this, officials from the Treasury have asserted that the Secretary possesses the authority to authorize the issuance of commemorative coins under certain circumstances.
The introduction of this coin is not only a significant aspect of the upcoming anniversary celebrations but also a reflection of the Treasury Department’s efforts to honor historical and current national figures. As the country approaches its milestone year, the coin stands as a testament to its historical journey and the figures who have played pivotal roles along the way.
