The rebuilding of Gaza is facing further delays as disagreements over the disarmament of armed groups continue to stall progress. This impasse has practical implications for the region’s reconstruction efforts and humanitarian projects, which are crucial for the area’s recovery and stability.
The Board of Peace will brief representatives from numerous countries on September 23, during the United Nations General Assembly, about these reconstruction efforts. This meeting is expected to include international partners, mediators, and key stakeholders who will assess the current status and strategize on upcoming priorities for Gaza’s redevelopment.
A pivotal component of the discussions will be the disarmament of Hamas and other factions, a lingering issue that has hindered the broader initiative to rebuild Gaza. Israeli opposition to certain elements of the disarmament proposal has been a significant roadblock, affecting necessary cooperation for the reconstruction plans to advance.
In addition to the disarmament talks, a committee of Palestinian technocrats plans to present 71 projects intended for implementation in the initial six months, although a start date remains undefined. The projects are designed to address governance, reconstruction, and humanitarian needs but cannot proceed without resolution of the disarmament disputes.
Representatives from various UN agencies and the European Union are also expected to attend the briefing, aiming to explore potential areas for collaboration.
