In a renewed diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to restart trilateral peace talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. Meeting in St Petersburg, Witkoff presented fresh proposals aimed at ending the war and discussed potential steps toward a negotiated settlement. This meeting marks his ninth in-person engagement with Putin.
Putin indicated a willingness to collaborate with US President Donald Trump on various international matters, including Iran’s nuclear program. He also mentioned the possibility of a future meeting with Trump in China, potentially involving Chinese President Xi Jinping, to further discuss these issues.
The discussions come after Witkoff’s recent meeting in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as Finnish and Norwegian leaders, and representatives from Europe and NATO. These talks aimed to develop a coordinated strategy for negotiations with Russia and to identify components of a comprehensive peace agreement. Key issues on the table included security guarantees for Ukraine, postwar economic recovery, and the future of European security arrangements.
Zelenskyy has expressed a desire for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to overcome the main barriers to ending the conflict. However, the Kremlin has maintained that any direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would require extensive preparation to ensure meaningful progress.
While the latest diplomatic efforts underscore Washington’s renewed attempts to bring the parties back to negotiations, significant challenges persist in reaching a consensus acceptable to all sides. The outcome of these discussions remains uncertain as the involved nations continue to navigate their complex geopolitical interests.
