Iran has issued a warning that it may pull out of peace talks with the United States, accusing Israel of breaching a ceasefire agreement through military actions in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that the ceasefire should be upheld on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and cautioned that any violation would be regarded as a violation of the entire agreement. Iran holds both Israel and the United States accountable for any repercussions stemming from renewed hostilities.
President Donald Trump responded by noting that Washington had not received formal notification of Iran’s decision to pause negotiations but indicated that such a development might be acceptable. He affirmed that the US would continue its blockade on Iranian ports while refraining from immediate military escalation. Meanwhile, efforts to sustain the ceasefire are ongoing, with Trump engaging in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intermediaries associated with Hezbollah.
Lebanon later confirmed that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a mutual cessation of hostilities, including halts to strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. However, Netanyahu issued a warning that Israel would persist in targeting Hezbollah if attacks on Israeli civilians continued. The situation intensified as Israel issued evacuation warnings for certain areas of Beirut.
In response to potential Israeli military action, Iran cautioned that a significant Israeli assault on Beirut or its southern suburbs would provoke retaliatory strikes against targets within Israel. Iranian officials also accused the United States of not fulfilling ceasefire commitments, pointing to ongoing economic pressures and military actions as evidence. Tehran has stated that future negotiations, including those concerning its nuclear program, will remain paused until broader security issues are resolved.
The heightening tensions have added to uncertainty in the region, creating renewed pressure on global oil markets. The unfolding situation underscores the fragile nature of regional stability and the complex web of alliances and hostilities that complicate peace efforts.
