The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy in Traverse City, Michigan, is set to enhance its energy resilience through the installation of a new 1.15 MW battery energy storage system. This development, now fully funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, will significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy use at the conservancy’s headquarters.
The energy storage system will work in tandem with the existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic setup at the site, storing solar-generated electricity for use during periods when sunlight is not available. This project aims to bolster the efficient use of renewable energy sources, thereby supporting the region’s sustainability goals.
Advanced Battery Concepts, a Michigan-based energy storage company, will supply the patented GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology for the project. This technology is noted for using less lead than traditional batteries while maintaining the same level of safety and recyclability. The batteries will be housed in three BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures, showcasing Michigan’s contribution to the domestic energy storage supply chain.
Funding for the project comes from Congressionally Directed Spending, underlining the government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure. With financial backing secured, the project has moved into the procurement and manufacturing phase, with installation and commissioning expected by the second quarter of 2027.
This initiative not only represents a step forward for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy but also highlights the broader trend towards integrating advanced energy storage solutions with renewable energy systems. It demonstrates a significant investment in sustainable technology that could serve as a model for similar initiatives nationwide.
