Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is revitalizing its security collaboration with the United States, marking a departure from the strained ties experienced during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The appointment of Omar García Harfuch as Security Cabinet coordinator has been pivotal in this renewed alliance. Harfuch’s engagement with senior US officials has focused on enhancing intelligence sharing and tackling organized crime. Mexican authorities have noted that quicker information exchanges have significantly improved their ability to counter criminal activities effectively.
President Sheinbaum’s administration has reported significant progress, including tens of thousands of arrests, major drug and weapon seizures, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug laboratories. Additionally, Mexico has expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the US. Officials also cite a marked reduction in fentanyl trafficking, signaling significant advancements in the fight against drug-related crimes.
This shift in cooperation represents a stark contrast to the previous administration, which had closed a US intelligence unit in Mexico and imposed stringent rules on foreign security agents. Relations between the two countries were further strained after the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disagreements over the handling of organized crime investigations. Tensions were exacerbated in 2024 when allegations surfaced linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign, which, despite not leading to formal charges, damaged trust between the Mexican government and US authorities.
While Sheinbaum has worked towards strengthening ties with the United States, she remains firm on maintaining Mexico’s sovereignty and mutual respect in the relationship. Her administration has expressed disapproval over perceived attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security leadership. Consequently, while the cooperation has seen significant improvements, both nations continue to approach their partnership with caution, striving for enhanced coordination against organized crime without compromising Mexico’s sovereignty and national interests.
