US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is urging Cubans to seize the moment for political change, following President Donald Trump’s provocative remarks about US warships potentially passing near Cuba. Rubio’s call comes amid heightened public frustration over corruption and economic challenges in Cuba, exacerbated by privileges enjoyed by a small elite.
Rubio took to social media to encourage those seeking change in Cuba, though he did not detail any specific plans or operations. His comments coincide with Trump’s statements at a political rally in Florida, where the President suggested that Rubio could play a role in forming an agreement with Cuba, reigniting speculation about US intentions toward the Cuban government.
The Cuban government reacted strongly, with Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío ridiculing the idea of cooperation with US intelligence agencies. Cuban officials accused the US of meddling in their internal affairs, reflecting the sustained tension between the two nations.
Rubio has been a long-time critic of Cuba’s socialist government, labeling its economic system as dysfunctional and expressing concerns over Cuba’s ties with nations deemed adversaries of the US. The Trump administration has consistently applied economic sanctions against Havana, while simultaneously expressing a desire to resolve outstanding issues through negotiation.
Relations between the US and Cuba remain fraught, despite recent talks between officials from both countries. Washington continues to voice concerns over Cuba’s national security alliances, whereas Havana opposes the longstanding US economic embargo.
Cuba is currently grappling with a severe economic and energy crisis, characterized by power outages, food shortages, inflation, and decreased economic activity. These challenges have fueled public protests and driven significant emigration from the island.
