US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a pivotal four-day visit to India on Saturday, with a mission to bolster strategic alliances and enhance collaboration across sectors such as trade, defence, energy, and technology. This visit underscores a commitment to deepening the ties between the two nations, with significant political and economic implications on the horizon.
Rubio’s itinerary includes bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as well as a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The timing of this visit is particularly noteworthy as it aligns with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue’s foreign ministers’ meeting, featuring India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The agenda is expected to tackle issues related to Indo-Pacific security, with a focus on defence collaboration, critical technologies, and building resilient supply chains, especially in light of China’s expanding influence in the region.
Trade relations are poised to be a central theme during the discussions, following tensions stemming from tariff measures imposed by President Donald Trump on Indian exports. Both nations are eager to explore avenues to enhance economic cooperation and alleviate trade frictions. Energy security is another crucial point of discussion, as the United States seeks to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India, amidst India’s ongoing procurement of discounted Russian oil.
Defence cooperation remains a cornerstone of the dialogue, with India’s current use of several US-manufactured defence systems, such as Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. Discussions are likely to delve into potential joint production and collaboration in advanced defence and space technologies, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
During his stay, Secretary Rubio is also set to visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, his schedule includes a visit to the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, an organization founded by Mother Teresa, adding a humanitarian dimension to his diplomatic mission. These engagements highlight the multifaceted approach of Rubio’s visit, encompassing strategic, economic, and cultural objectives.
