The United States has issued a stern warning to Oman concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump, during a cabinet meeting, emphasized that the vital global oil shipping lane must remain open to all and not fall under the control of any single nation. This warning follows reports of Iran and Oman possibly planning to levy transit tolls on vessels navigating through this crucial waterway.
Trump highlighted the significant role the Strait of Hormuz plays in global oil transportation, with nearly 20% of the world’s supply passing through it. He asserted that the U.S. would vigorously monitor the strait to ensure the freedom of navigation is upheld. The president also made it clear that Oman would face severe repercussions if it failed to cooperate, stating that the nation must “behave just like everybody else.”
This development comes amid heightened tensions due to the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, which has already led to disruptions in the region. As a longtime ally of the United States, Oman has traditionally acted as a mediator in Middle Eastern disputes, often facilitating diplomatic dialogues between Iran and Western countries.
President Trump further accused Iran of stalling negotiations, suggesting that Tehran is attempting to outlast current political dynamics in the U.S. ahead of upcoming midterm elections. This assertion adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the involved countries.
