In a significant development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans for the United States to intensify its collaboration with Latin American partners to tackle drug trafficking. During his visit to Ecuador, Rubio highlighted that Washington is pursuing agreements for joint operations with nations such as Ecuador and Colombia. These operations would focus particularly on territorial waters and adhere to the respective countries’ local laws.
Rubio’s statements come in the context of an ongoing US military campaign targeting boats believed to be linked to drug trafficking activities. The campaign has seen at least 69 operations since its inception in September 2025, resulting in the reported deaths of at least 230 individuals. A recent strike in the Caribbean Sea alone reportedly caused the deaths of three people. Rubio emphasized that any future military actions would be carefully evaluated on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the specific threat and the vessel’s location.
A key aspect of the US strategy involves enhancing cooperation with regional governments to disrupt and ultimately dismantle drug-trafficking routes. Rubio asserted that such collaborations are crucial to effectively addressing the issue and stressed that the US is committed to working alongside its neighbors in Latin America.
This move toward increased partnership marks a shift from earlier unilateral military strikes by the US, which had drawn criticism. The previous strikes were carried out against vessels whose occupants were accused by the Trump administration of being involved with so-called “narco-terrorists.”
