The United States is nearing the conclusion of a trade agreement with India, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio highlighted ongoing negotiations as a factor in the US’s decisions regarding national security waivers related to Russian energy sanctions.
Rubio emphasized that the US is working diligently to finalize the trade deal, with plans to visit India and engage in discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai. The potential agreement comes amid challenges posed by high global energy prices and the complexities countries face in transitioning away from Russian energy supplies.
India remains a crucial buyer of Russian energy, and Rubio acknowledged that shifting energy sources requires time due to geographical and logistical constraints. The current sanctions related to Russian energy have been temporarily waived rather than permanently lifted, allowing the US administration to enforce them in the future if necessary.
On the Indian side, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the first tranche of the India-US bilateral trade agreement has been finalized and is currently undergoing legal drafting. Both nations are working toward completing the process to make the agreement operational.
